New print preview on Google Docs

Google silently updated the print preview pane on Google Docs.

Now, instead of opening a new tab with a rather dull preview, we get this gorgeous overlay preview.

Boomerang for Gmail: disappointing

Boomerang is supposed to make up for a lack of mail scheduling in Gmail. Good idea, but sadly too much flaws to make it a viable option.

  • You must resort to the English interface (I tried with English (US); I did not try English (UK)); at least with French, the « Send Later » button won’t appear.
  • You must allow pop-ups for authentification!
  • You must allow IMAP access; if you activated the Advanced IMAP control lab, you must also allow Drafts to be visible in IMAP — does it mean that Boomerang has access to my mail?
  • The Hour must be entered manually, because the bulit-in calendar doesn’t allow selecting hours.

Extra conditions:

  • Scheduled mails do not appear in Drafts, but in a <q>Boomerang-Outbox</q> label (or in a new button in the toolbar!
  • It seems that Boomerang for Gmail can’t be deployed in Google Apps; it must be manually installed in any Chrome browser :/
  • Worst of all, the free version only allows for 10 messages to be scheduled.

It’s a shame, especially considering an earlier version was much better.

Google multiple accounts: now more than three accounts

It is now possible to have more than thee accounts simultaneously with the multiple accounts. I don’t know how old is this, but that’s pretty cool, sometimes (at least for me).

Coding Horror: HTML in Gmail

I am OK with badly written HTML on a daily basis if I have to. But a signature is something one has time crafting properly. And so, I would like to be able to create a clean HTML signature. Plus, experience told me that even the signature is not that clean when copied and pasted from a mail. Pure HTML is so much better.

I WANT to be able to instert my HTML signature in code way, not WYSIWYG way!

Not convinced? See for yourself:

No pasting into Google Presentations

Get used to it: every once in a while, I’ll post in English, be it for international audience or simply because I wrote elsewhere in English and don’t feel like translating the whole thing.

Context: impossible to paste Google documents to Google presentation (internal pasting, web clipboard). Someone complains at Google’s forum. Below is my reply.

Same problem. I tried to copy from drawings to presentation, to no avail. I tried with brand new documents too (new drawng and new presentation). Heck! They even have an article on how it is supposed to work!

abedepaul81 > right, I think they have to revamp the whole Google Apps thing. They accumulated a lot of technology, they sort of merged everything together, but this is very inconsistent (just one example among countless other: did you noticed you can use some fonts in Google Write, but not in Google Presentations?)

They should seriously look at Apple and its framework, which tremendously help achieving a unified interface (for instance, thanks to textServices, every single OS X application coded the right way may use basic Emacs bindings for text manipulation like ctrl+e). Much, much better.

Sure, it requires a massive backoffice rethinking and it will definitely cost time and money. But it will definitely pay for it in the (not-so-long) run.
